Megan Thee Stallion opens up about facing men’s expectations in Julie Adenuga interview

Megan also described how her views on men have changed after gaining fame and success as an artist. “I’m starting to see how much more ignorant men are than I thought,” she shared with Adenuga.

“When you’re a woman who’s not a threat, men don’t really bother you,” she continued. “And then as you grow into your own and as you become somebody who doesn’t need a man or somebody who is so independent… men like that damsel in distress type of role and that’s not me.”

Megan felt that that’s “what kind of gets under a lot of men’s skin,” adding that she makes “a lot of them uncomfortable and I feel like that’s my job.”

“I’m not a normal woman, I’m not a normal person, and if my un-normalness offends you, well, I’m obviously doing something right and, baby, look the other way,” she asserted.

Megan is currently in the UK for a series of performances, beginning last night (September 10) in Manchester. She is also slated to perform at Wireless Festival 2021 tomorrow at London’s Crystal Palace Park.

On festival crowds, Adenuga pointed out the ethnic differences between US and UK audiences, asking Megan if she is ready for that.

“I would hope they know better than to say the N-word. But honestly, when I’m performing to these huge crowds, it’s probably like the first two rows of Hotties that I’m looking at,” she said.

“I’m not trying to look out into the crowd. But the ones that make it to the front, they be the most lit. It’s often like I’m performing to them the whole time, because they are singing word for word, pointing fingers, twerking. I’m like, ‘Yes, these are my people.’”

Last night, Drake made a surprise appearance at Wireless Festival, performing cuts off ‘Certified Lover Boy’ during Future‘s set.

Last year’s awards ceremony took place primarily in New York, but in a variety of outdoor locations and without an audience due to the coronavirus pandemic. A host of remote live performances were also pre-recorded for the occasion.

A live audience is set to be in attendance this year, while the awards show will feature “performances from some of music’s biggest stars and celebrate the return of live entertainment”.

Megan Thee Stallion vs homophobia in hip-hop: “Representation is important”

“It is about time,” she said. “Representation is important, and it is really crucial for us all to have compassion and acceptance of every human.”

Megan’s comments come after she was accused of being homophobic back in 2019 after Twitter users discovered an old tweet in which the ‘Hot Girl Summer’ rapper used a gay slur against someone.

“This lil f****t just pissed me off,” she tweeted during her late teens.

Addressing the controversy in 2018 and 2019, Megan said she apologised for her language and insisted the post did not represent her current views.

Earlier this week, 11 organisations in HIV/AIDS prevention, education and treatment penned an open letter to DaBaby requesting a private meeting to address his controversial comments.

Organisations such as GLAAD, Black AIDS Institute, Prevention Access Campaign, and more, as well as leading academics, delivered the address after the rapper (real name Jonathan Lyndale Kirk) issued an apology for his homophobic rant at Miami’s Rolling Loud Festival last month.

During his performance, the rapper encouraged the crowd to put their mobile phone flashlights in the air if they “didn’t show up today with HIV/AIDS or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that will make you die in two to three weeks”.

Elsewhere, he said: “Fellas, if you ain’t sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone light up.”

Apologising for his comments on Monday (Aug 2), DaBaby said: “I want to apologise to the LGBTQ+ community for the hurtful and triggering comments I made.

“Again, I apologise for my misinformed comments about HIV/AIDS and I know education on this is important.

“I appreciate the many people who came to me with kindness, who reached out to me privately to offer wisdom, education, and resources. That’s what I needed and it was received.”

Meanwhile, a new report has found that Dua Lipa‘s ‘Levitating’ featuring DaBaby is getting less airplay following the latter’s recent homophobic comments.

ASL interpreter goes viral after ‘WAP’ performance with Megan Thee Stallion and Cardi B

The clip also sees a brief appearance from Megan Fox and her partner Machine Gun Kelly, walking past the front of the stage.

The ASL interpreter is the Instagram user @Kelly4Access, who addressed the viral clip by highlighting the work of a number of Deaf ASL teachers, influencers and content creators.

“Thanks for the love on my page from hearing people but I’m just an interpreter passionate about providing access to a community I love and have learned everything from,” she said.

“If you’re still wondering why deaf and hard of hearing people go to concerts follow these pages and learn something new. Seeing an interpreter at a concert shouldn’t be shocking. Seeing a deaf interpreter on tour with every artist should be the norm!”

Among the pages she shared were others who have delivered ASL interpretations of tracks by Megan, Cardi and other artists, including dancer and ASL interpreters Raven Sutton and J-Tay.

Sutton has also gone viral for her own take on ‘WAP’, with Cardi herself retweeting the clip in summer 2020.

Another ASL creator went viral last August for taking on the Cardi and Megan hit. Libbey Ketterer’s version on YouTube channel ‘The Daily Sign’ has amassed almost 3million views in the time since.

As well as the guest spot from Cardi, Megan’s Lollapalooza set also featured The Grammy-winning ‘Savage (Remix)’, new track ‘Thot Shit’ and others – see footage, reaction and photos from the show here.

Elsewhere at the festival, Machine Gun Kelly surprised fans with a last-minute secret set, while Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst debuted his dramatic new look in public for the first time and closed their set by debuting new song ‘Dad Vibes’ over the PA system.

Meanwhile, Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell has said that the festival “did the right thing by returning in 2021, despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Later, she appears in a white bodysuit with cut out sides, hinting at the start of a new era. In between, a screen shows her body, mental health, confidence, bars, knees, and Tina Snow levels recovering until they hit 100 per cent.

Meanwhile, last month the star announced a new online reality show called Off Thee Leash With Megan Thee Stallion. The unscripted project is part of the expanded Snapchat Originals series from Snap Inc.

Megan will also perform at this year’s Wireless Festival, which will take place in London in September. She will be joined on the bill by headliners Future, Skepta and Migos, as well as the likes of Meek Mill and AJ Tracey.

Released on Friday (April 16), the clip is set in what appears to be a strip club, featuring some impressive pole moves from various dancers, as well as Megan herself.

In a four-star review of ‘Good News’, NME‘s Kyann-Sian Williams said of the album: “This debut finds Megan Thee Stallion determined to retain her freewheeling positivity in a difficult year.”

“If I’m not the hottest who is?” she adds later. “She got a booty fetish trying to steal my shit/ Ms to the lawyer just to handle my biz.”

The track features on Bankroll Freddie’s new album ‘Big Bank’, which was also released today. Other guest rappers included on the record include Young Dolph, 2 Chainz, Gucci Mane and more.

Meanwhile, earlier this week Megan donated $50,000 (£36,300) in the memory of the victims of last month’s Atlanta spa shootings.

In an Instagram post, the rapper said she was “heartbroken” by the attacks, which killed eight people including six women of Asian descent. She added that the shootings were “a senseless, violent attack against Asian Americans”.

“We stand in solidarity with all Asian Americans in saying that enough is enough,” she added. The star’s donation was made in collaboration with clothing brand Fashion Nova and journalist May Lee and was given to the Atlanta branch of the non-profit group Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

Dave, Megan Thee Stallion and Disclosure lead line-up for Parklife Festival 2021

Skepta, Jamie xx, AJ Tracey, Four Tet, Little Simz, Celeste and Pa Salieu are among the other UK names that ticketholders can expect to see at Heaton Park.

Fans who have registered for the event will be able to access a pre-sale here from 10am tomorrow (March 24).

Last month Parklife co-founder Sacha Lord told NME that the ongoing success of the UK’s vaccination programme has given him hope that the event will take place later this year without social distancing regulations.

“The vaccination roll-out has been incredible and hats off to all our scientists and NHS volunteers,” he said.

“For once, we can say that we have got something that’s world-beating. It’s phenomenal and we’ve got leading scientists saying they’re confident that everyone will have had their second vaccine by July.”

Lord also told NME that full-capacity would be key to the event’s success – days before the government unveiled plans to scrap all social distancing measures by the end of June.

“We pushed back Parklife to September and we’re confident it will go ahead. We’ve got New Order on the night before and we’re gearing up for success with an 80,000 capacity,” he said.

“We’re not considering operating with social distancing – I personally don’t like these socially distanced events. I think to go to a proper gig or a proper rave you need to be shoulder-to-shoulder in a hot sweaty environment. You cannot create that atmosphere at a socially distanced event.”

Other festivals taking place this summer include Wireless, Latitude and Reading & Leeds.

Megan Thee Stallion celebrates birthday with new track ‘Southside Forever Freestyle’

In the song’s video, Megan pays homage to her hometown by sporting a Houston Rockets baseball cap and matching bikini as she raps into a hanging microphone, while Juicy J operates a pair of CDJs behind her.

Watch the video for ‘Southside Forever Freestyle’ below:

Last month, Megan dropped a new dance video for ‘Body’, directed by ‘WAP’ video director Colin Tilley.

The track is one of the stand-outs on the Houston rapper’s debut studio album ‘Good News’, which was released back in November.

The original video for ‘Body’ was released to accompany the arrival of ‘Good News’ on November 20, and Megan has followed those visuals up with a new clip which sees her reuniting with Tilley.

Megan recently appeared in the video for Ariana Grande’s ‘34+35’ remix, which she features on alongside Doja Cat.

The trio had been teasing the music video’s release on social media earlier this month, sharing behind-the-scenes selfies to their respective accounts.

Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion competed in a live Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate match last week.

The match was the ‘WAP’ rapper’s second collaboration with the Mortal Kombat franchise. As a longtime fan of the series, Megan The Stallion cosplayed as her favourite character Mileena for a Mortal Kombat 11 ad in November, ahead of the Kombat Pack 2 release.

Megan Thee Stallion hits the dancefloor on Joel Corry remix of ‘Body’

The remix follows a new dance video for ‘Body’, which was directed by ‘WAP’ director Colin Tilley. The clip features choreography from JaQuel Knight and sees Megan and a troupe of six dancers performing a series of routines to ‘Body’.

The original video for ‘Body’, meanwhile, featured cameos from the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Jordan Woods, Blac Chyna and more.

The song has also spurred on a viral challenge on TikTok in the form of the #BodyOdyChallenge. So far, it has seen more than 1.7million videos created with the hashtag.

Megan recently appeared on a new remix of Ariana Grande’s ‘34+35’ alongside Doja Cat, which was released earlier this month. The rapper hinted that she was one of two guests on the new version of the track ahead of its release, commenting with a series of eye emojis underneath a teaser posted by Grande.

Meanwhile, the ‘Good News’ star’s old audition tape for Love & Hip Hop was recently released by VH1. While the network ultimately decided not to include Megan on the show, the rapper can be seen in the video seemingly predicting her own rise to fame.

Ariana Grande announces ‘34+35’ remix with Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion

Now, the singer has revealed the mystery women are Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion. She shared an illustration of the trio on her Twitter page earlier today, captioning it: “tonight @dojacat @theestallion @arianagrande”. See the tweets below.

Doja previously hinted that she had teamed up with Grande and Megan. On her own Twitter account earlier this month (January 5), she drew her followers’ attention to the then-eight people she was following.

“Following them for a reeeeaaaaasssoooonnn 😉 Guess why,” she wrote. The list included Grande and Megan, as well as French Montana, Young Thug, The Weeknd, SZA, A$AP Ferg and Saweetie.

The original version of ’34+35’ featured on Grande’s latest album ‘Positions’. In a three-star review of the record, NME said of the track: “On the raunchily titled ’34+35′ (you do the maths), she begins: “If I put it quite plainly / Just give me them babies”. In case that demand was too understated, she later asks: “Can you stay up all night? / Fuck me ’til the daylight”.

A video was released for the single in November, which saw the pop star play both a scientist and an android that she brought to life.

Doja Cat teases collaborations with Megan Thee Stallion, Ariana Grande, SZA and more

If that reason is because she’s collaborated with them, then it looks as if Doja Cat has recruited French Montana, Megan Thee Stallion, A$AP Ferg, Saweetie, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Young Thug and SZA for her new music.

Following them for a reeeeaaaaasssoooonnn 😉 Guess why.

— PLANET HER (@DojaCat) January 5, 2021

Back in September, Doja Cat revealed that her new album is “all ready”.

She told Fat Joe during an Instagram Live on September 10 that she would have liked to have released the record then, but said: “You have to plan things accordingly and there’s a lot going on”.

Last week, Doja Cat, alongside Megan Thee Stallion, Miley Cyrus and more, performed as part of the line-up for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

Meanwhile, Nas has addressed his now-infamous Doja Cat namedrop, explaining that the attention it received is symptomatic of the social media age.

In August the rapper released ‘Ultra Black‘, the lead single from his new album ‘King’s Disease‘, which contains the lyric: “We going Ultra Black/ Unapologetically Black/ The opposite of Doja Cat“. Fans were quick to hype up the line online despite Doja Cat saying she wouldn’t beef with the star because he is a hero of hers.

Nas said of the situation in an interview with NME: “Well, I’ve been away, so, of course, I mention someone’s name that’s popular and people are gonna talk about it. I hear people do it all the time but no one makes a big deal of it. Maybe it’s because I don’t put out records a lot, so they’re like, ‘Whoa!’”

He continued: “I don’t really know the world that these stars live in anymore. I’m rapping the same way I did when I was on the block, but now there’s a new world and what I say can take off with social media and I can’t do anything about it.”

Megan Thee Stallion says ‘WAP’ controversy comes from a place of “fear and insecurity”

Speaking in a new interview, Megan discussed the controversy surrounding the track and why she thinks it took place.

“Some people just don’t know what to do when a woman is in control and taking ownership of her own body,” Megan told GQ. “I feel like for a long time men felt like they owned sex and now women are saying, ‘Hey, this is for me. I want pleasure. This is how I want it or don’t want it.’ It freaks men the hell out.”

She added: “It just comes from a place of fear and insecurity, like why would anyone be mad about my ‘WAP’? It belongs to me.”

Earlier this year, Megan responded to the right-wing backlash ‘WAP’ received. “When I saw all of the politicians in an uproar about mine and Cardi’s ‘WAP’, I was just really taken back,” she told TIME.

“Like, why is this your focus right now? If you have an issue with what I’m saying don’t listen to it. Tune out, ’cause I didn’t ask you to tune in.”

Back in September, after four weeks on the singles chart, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion‘s ‘WAP’ earned the number one spot on the UK singles chart.

Earlier this week, US congresswoman Maxine Waters thanked Megan for her recent New York Times op-ed, entitled ‘Why I Speak Up For Black Women’.

In a letter to the rapper, Waters said she “can’t thank [Megan] enough for bringing much needed attention to the plight of Black women, not just here in the United States – but everywhere”.

Megan Thee Stallion released her debut album ‘Good News’ last month. It followed her smash hit collaboration ‘WAP’ with Cardi B.

NME has named ‘WAP’ the number one song of 2020, writing: “Dangerously horny in a way that speaks directly to the casual sex bans of the lockdown age, ‘WAP’ was the titan track that drenched the entire year. Bring a bucket and a mop.”

The ‘Hot Girl Summer’ artist also revealed this week (October 28) that she’s waiting on a couple of guest performances for her own record, as her hotly-anticipated debut album nears completion.

Addressing fans via Twitter, Megan said she was “waiting on two more features then I’m done,” and hinted that ‘City Girls’ will be on the record.

Megan Thee Stallion teases “crazy” debut album

The record will be the star’s debut album following three EPs and one mixtape since 2017. Speaking to NME about it earlier this year, the rapper said: “I feel like I had been through so much; I was just finally ready to commit to the process.

“When I’m by myself, that’s when my creativity comes to me. The whole album was basically written in the living room, the shower, the backyard – just visualise it with me.”

Earlier this year, Megan teamed up with Cardi B for the chart-topping single ‘WAP’, which drew backlash from right-wing politicians and commentators. She said she was “really taken back” by their response, asking: “Why is this your focus right now? If you have an issue with what I’m saying don’t listen to it. Tune out, cos I didn’t ask you to tune in.”

Meanwhile, the musician championed Black women and addressed the alleged Tory Lanez shooting incident in a new op-ed for the New York Times last week (October 13).

In the piece, titled Why I Speak Up For Black Women, Megan opened by observing how Black women have become “a highly courted voting bloc” who are “expected once again to deliver victory for Democratic candidates” in next month’s US election.

Megan is currently a Health Care Administration major studying at Texas Southern University. As a press release notes, the rapper is “incredibly passionate about the transformative power of education and remains a strong advocate for women pursuing a college degree”.

In other news, Megan delivered a politically charged Saturday Night Live performance of ‘Don’t Stop’ and ‘Savage’ over the weekend. During her debut appearance on the US show, she called for justice for Breonna Taylor.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron later criticised Megan’s “disgusting” targeting of him, in which she slammed his handling of the high profile murder case.

Appearing on Fox & Friends, Cameron said he agreed with Megan’s call to “protect Black women” but said: “The fact that someone would get on national television and make disparaging comments about me because I’m simply trying to do my job is disgusting.”

Kentucky Attorney General hits back at Megan Thee Stallion’s comments on ‘SNL’

Megan herself then proclaimed: “We need to protect our Black women and love our Black women, because at the end of the day, we need our Black women.”

Now, Cameron has responded and branded her comments “disgusting”.

Appearing on Fox & Friends, Cameron said he agreed with Megan’s call to “protect Black women” but added “the fact that someone would get on national television and make disparaging comments about me because I’m simply trying to do my job is disgusting.”

Cameron went on, saying he’s used to receiving backlash because he’s a “Black Republican” who “stands up for truth and justice as opposed to giving into a mob mentality.”

He added: “The fact that a celebrity that I’ve never met before wants to make those sorts of statements – they don’t hurt me, but what it does, it exposes the type of intolerance that people… and the hypocrisy. Because obviously people preach about being tolerant. You’ve seen a lot of that from the left about being tolerant. But what you saw there is inconsistent with tolerance. In fact, it’s her espousing intolerance.”

Last month, a grand jury assembled by Cameron decided against charging the police officers responsible for shooting and killing Taylor.

Meanwhile, Bryson Tiller has honoured Breonna Taylor with a series of billboard messages in Kentucky.

Megan Thee Stallion’s lawyer claims Tory Lanez’s team launched “smear campaign” over shooting allegations

In a statement given to Variety, Megan’s attorney claimed Lanez’s representatives had since launched a “smear campaign” in an effort to discredit the star’s claims. “We have been made aware of manipulated text messages and invented email accounts that have been disseminated to the media in a calculated attempt to peddle a false narrative about the events that occurred on July the 12,” said Alex Spiro. “A smear campaign can’t change the truth.”

One email cited to be part of the campaign linked to a video of a man who claimed to be Lanez’s former bodyguard. In the clip, which has since been removed from YouTube, the man claimed he had never seen Lanez be violent towards women.

Another email shared by TMZ alleged Megan’s management company Roc Nation had influenced the plaintiff in a lawsuit filed against Lanez, saying he went on “menacing attack” at a club in Miami. Roc Nation have denied the claims.

Representatives for Lanez declined to comment when contacted by NME.

According to reports earlier this month, Lanez allegedly sent Megan an apology text following the incident. TMZ claimed to have obtained a text he sent her 15 hours after the alleged shooting in which he apologised “from the bottom of my heart”.

A post shared by Live Nation Concerts (@livenation) on Aug 21, 2020 at 9:01am PDT

The star was shot in the foot last month and earlier today (August 21) responded to rumours that it was Tory Lanez who had fired the gun. “Since y’all hoes so worried ’bout it,” she said, “yes, this n**** Tory shot me.”

Megan continued: “You shot me. And you got your publicist and your people going to these blogs lying and shit. Stop lying. Why lie? I don’t understand. I tried to keep the situation off the internet, but you dragging it. You really fucking dragging it.”

Lanez was arrested and charged on July 12 after police found a gun in his car. His team have since denied that the Canadian rapper has been deported from the US following the arrest.

He is due to appear in court on October 13 and has previously denied shooting Megan The Stallion.

DJ Khaled teases Megan Thee Stallion collab: “We cooked something up”

In the same interview, he teased his next album ‘Khaled Khaled’, having previously collaborated with Drake on two new tracks earlier this month.

“I’m going to break out ‘Khaled Khaled’ more through the process, through the rollout. You know what I mean?,” he said.

“And this was a way to come with two keys. My first and last name is the same. That’s true. Two keys there, too. I got two kids. And when I was talking to Drake, you know what I mean? I was like, ‘I want to hit him with a knockout.’ That’s what I asked him. I said, ‘I want to hit him with a knockout.’”

While his twelfth album is yet to secure a release date, it comes just over a year after the release of his last album, ‘Father of Asahd’, which dropped in May 2019.

Last month, Khaled also won Video Of The Year at this year’s BET Awards for his ‘Higher’ single, featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend.

Megan Thee Stallion reveals she was shot amid Tory Lanez arrest: “Incredibly grateful to be alive”

The message read: “The narrative that is being reported about Sunday morning’s events are inaccurate and I’d like to set the record straight.

“On Sunday morning, I suffered gunshot wounds, as a result of a crime that was committed against me and done with the intention to physically harm me.

“I was never arrested, the police officers drove me to the hospital where I underwent surgery to remove the bullets.

“I’m incredibly grateful to be alive and that I’m expected to make a full recovery, but it was important for me to clarify the details about this traumatic night.

“I’m currently focused on my recovery, so I can return back to my lie and back to making music as soon as possible.”

Her statement on social media comes after Lanez, the Canadian artist, real name Daystar Peterson, was arrested in the early hours of Sunday after police were called to a residence in the Hollywood Hills, which had been hosting a private party, following an incident, according to TMZ.

Law enforcement sources told the publication that witnesses reported hearing people arguing in an SUV before someone fired shots in the air.

Police were reportedly able to locate the SUV in question, which Lanez, Megan Thee Stallion and another unnamed woman were riding in, shortly after the incident.

As the car was searched, officers discovered a gun and Lanez was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon in his vehicle — a felony offence.

Megan Thee Stallion was reportedly taken to hospital and was later listed as a “victim” in the police report, TMZ reported at the time.

Jail records from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department show that Lanez posted his $35,000 bail and was released at 10:05AM on Sunday.

He is now scheduled to appear in court in LA on October 13.

Last month, LL Cool J argued that he “paved the way” for a number of modern rappers who approach certain themes, singling out Drake, Fabolous and Jadakiss.

Discussing his 1987 hit ‘I Need Love’, one of the first sensitive hip-hop tracks to become a hit, the rapper remembered “a lot of friction” when the track was released.

“Back then, it was really conservative and if the energy wasn’t testosterone, like I’m punching you in your face, kicking the door down, you don’t get a lot of credit,” he told Complex.
