Smashing Pumpkins share new song ‘Spellbinding’, announce US tour with Interpol

Frontman Billy Corgan recently told NME about his ambitions for the 33-song project, explaining: “Because there’s a lot of people who believe less is more these days. I’m on the opposite side – I actually think more is more!”

Listen to ‘Spellbinding’ below.

Earlier this month, Smashing Pumpkins headlined a new festival in Mexico called The World Is A Vampire alongside Interpol, and have now announced a US tour of the same name, taking place across July, August and September.

Interpol will also join the band on the tour, with Rival Sons and Stone Temple Pilots also on board for select dates. Tickets will go on sale here from 10am local time on Friday, March 31.

Elsewhere, Billy Corgan admitted in November that his idea for a triple album was initially met with “a big shrug” from his bandmates.

In a new interview with The Guardian, Corgan said that the initial idea for the record was met coldly by his bandmates, with Corgan himself describing his own “sentimentality” with regards to nodding to the band’s older albums as “unbearable”.

“Some of my own sentimentalism, I find it unbearable – like: ‘Oh, jeez, get off the hearts and stars’,” he said. “But sometimes I find myself grappling for something that gives me the same je ne sais quoi feeling as when I watch the old silent movies.”

Shygirl teams up with Björk on new version of ‘Woe’

She continued: “I decided to take an angle as an older “amour” and give advice…because in “Woe” she is asking a question and I decided to reply to it from the SUFI angle which is: enjoy the wanting and the longing and NOT getting what you want but enjoy wanting it.”

Björk elsewhere explained how the track represents personal relationships, and the pursuit for ‘satisfaction’. “How the whirling dervishes reach up when they turn, it is meant to represent that longing and being content with that. Also, on a more everyday personal level, it is about sometimes, when you are not satisfied in a relationship, you should not expect your partner to heal that or fix that. Rather look at him or her as a partner in crime or a fellow-not-getter – another human with that insatiable longing.”

The music video sees Shygirl in a series of various montages around Tokyo, including in a love hotel. You can check it out below:

‘Woe (I See It From Your Side)’ isn’t the first time Shygirl and Björk have linked up. Back in January, Shygirl was brought on board alongside Sega Bodega for a new remix of her song ‘Ovule’.

Shygirl is currently on tour in North America – you can see the full list of dates below and buy any remaining tickets here.

Pixies announce US headline tour in support of ‘Doggerel’

Tickets are available here and the band have promised “more North American tour dates will be announced in the near future”.

Check out the full list of dates below:

MAY 2023
04 – Fox Theater, Oakland, CA
06 – Golden State Theatre Monterey, CA
08 – The Van Buren, Phoenix, AZ
09 – Lensic Performing Arts Center, Santa Fe, NM
10 – The Mission Ballroom, Denver, CO
12 – Encore Theatre at Wynn, Las Vegas, NV
13 – Encore Theatre at Wynn, Las Vegas, NV
14 – Kilby Block Party, Salt Lake City, UT

According to reports, Pixies rehearse at least 90 different songs before every tour and make the setlist up as they go.

This string of shows will be in support of eight studio album ‘Doggerel’, which was released earlier this year.

In a four-star review, NME wrote: “Menace, too, matures like fine wine. Pixies’ seminal early albums – the very bedrock of modern alternative rock – were sharp and biting vintages: young and stinging, unrefined, spiced with Latino lust and melodic fury and prone to induce intoxicating visions both sci-fi and Biblical.

“But ‘Doggerel’, in its hospitably decanted way, is every bit as transportive and absorbing as the early records, and further proof that Pixies’ music remains the alt-rock gold standard. Swill it around and savour.”

Speaking about the record, Pixies frontman Black Francis told NME: “We’re getting better at what we do. Gradually over the years we’ve been building up different kinds of muscles and we have a cosmopolitan sophistication that we’re able to tap into on this record more than we’ve been able to before. We’re able to get a little more cinematic.”

Pixies are also set to tour the UK and Europe in February and March 2023. Check out the full list of dates and grab tickets here.

Reviewing Shygirl’s ‘Nymph’ upon its release earlier this year, NME wrote: “On ‘Nymph’, Shygirl creates a gleaming collage of club sounds, with each element wholly unique in its execution.

“After working tirelessly on her long-awaited debut album for a number of years, the juice has clearly been worth the squeeze: this record is a striking reminder of why Shygirl is one of the capital’s brightest talents.”

Mars Volta share new short film to accompany latest song, ‘Graveyard Love’

“They will seek your ruin, and burn your lands, because if they can’t have you, no one can,” Bixler-Zavala said of the song’s lyrics in a press release.

Now, the band have shared a new short film directed by Omar Rodríguez-López that depicts various scenes in Puerto Rico. You can watch it here:

The Texas-formed band released six studio albums between 2003 and 2012 before splitting due to a falling out between founding members Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodríguez-López.

The pair quickly made amends, however, and formed a new group, Antemasque. They also revamped their pre-Mars Volta outfit, At-the-Drive-In, for a new record in 2017.

Details of a potential new album, which would follow on from 2012’s ‘Noctourniquet’, are yet to emerge.

Florence + The Machine share Bill Nighy-starring video for new single ‘Free’

In it, Welch plays herself, while Nighy takes on the role of Florence’s anxiety. See the pair interacting in the ‘Free’ video below.

Earlier this week, Welch and co. previewed new ‘Dance Fever’ tracks – including ‘Free’ – at a handful of intimate UK gigs, ending last night (April 19) in London.

Reviewing the London gig at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, NME wrote: “It’s apt that Florence + The Machine have chosen to wrap up an intimate tour in support of forthcoming fifth album ‘Dance Fever’ in such a grand setting. There is much religious symbolism at work: the coiled frustration of ‘Big God’ is healed by the earthly, groove-led balm of ‘What The Water Gave Me’.

“The upper register of Welch’s voice reaches a scream at ‘King’’s heaving peak, before ‘Heaven Is Here’ is blasted at the rafters.”

‘Dance Fever’ serves as the follow-up to 2018’s ‘High As Hope’, with Welch previously describing the album as “a fairytale in 14 songs”. It was co-produced by the singer alongside Jack Antonoff and Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley, the latter of whom recently remixed ‘My Love’.

The band will embark on a full UK arena tour in November, while a huge North American tour will also take place later this year, with support from Arlo ParksSam FenderKing PrincessYves TumorJapanese Breakfast and Wet Leg on select dates.

It went on to say that the group “will air new songs at the shows, alongside material drawn from their acclaimed 25 year discography.”

Last week, the band also confirmed that founding members Jónsi and Georg Holm are joined in the studio and on tour by former member Kjartan Sveinsson, who is rejoining the band almost a decade after stepping away to focus on other projects.

Sveinsson was previously a member of the group from 1998, leaving in 2013 to “do something different”.

The multi-instrumentalist was not replaced following his departure, with Jónsi telling Paste that year: “We never thought about getting somebody else to replace him. I think we just wanted to keep on with the three of us.”

Sigur Rós shared a screenshot of a video call featuring Jónsi, Georg “Goggi” Holm and Sveinsson. “Two old faces and one new old face,” they captioned the post. “Three of us happy to be back together and doing what we love doing. Exciting times ahead.”

In 2020, Sigur Rós released the collaborative soundtrack album ‘Odin’s Raven Magic’ with Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, Steindór Andersen, Páll Guðmundsson and Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir. The composition originally served as an orchestral score to a poem by Hrafnagaldr Óðins and was created in 2002.

Last year, Jónsi released his latest solo album, ‘Obsidian’, alongside a visual art installation of the same name.

Watch Charli XCX and Rina Sawayama turn cult leaders in ‘Beg For You’ video

In the Nick Harwood-directed clip, Charli and Sawayama lead a cult through the lonely plains of Lancaster, California, accompanied by two characters depicting Jesus and Satan.

Towards the end of the video, the two pop stars perform a joint ritual on a raised platform as the cult dances around them in a circle. Charli then cuts her hand and squeezes the blood into a pool, which Jesus drinks from using a ladle. The cult then pass out leaving just Charli, Sawayama, Jesus and Satan.

You can watch the video below:

Charli has previously shared two other singles from ‘CRASH’: ‘Good Ones’ (which she later had remixed by Perfume Genius) and ‘New Shapes’ (which featured Christine And The Queens and Caroline Polachek).

The pop star has promised that her new record will sport “an overload of sexiness”, and teased that it will “make people dance and cry at the same time”.

Halsey hits back at trolls after revealing she’s studying for the bar exam

In a series of now-deleted tweets that were originally posted yesterday (May 27), Halsey hit back after a Twitter user noted that “someone on Reddit really tore into [Halsey’s] ‘studying for bar exams schtick’” before adding: “Why do all these celebrities want to study for the bar exam all of a sudden?”

As reported by Insider, Halsey then replied: “Why the fuck is it a crime to educate myself beyond just wanting to pass the bar Qs? I am following a law school curriculum even though CA state doesn’t require a degree to take the exam.

“Am I surprised someone on REDDIT tore into the ‘popstar’ for doing anything at all? Haha no.”

In another tweet, the singer took further aim at her detractors by adding: “Reddit said ‘haha gurl with big tiddies who sing fun song cant take smart people test!!!! dumb whore let’s k*ll her.’

ok I gotta delete all this now hahaha. but I love y’all and ur funny and it’s ain’t worth it.

— h (@halsey) May 27, 2020

After telling her followers that she’ll still need “to complete an apprenticeship among other things” after studying law, Halsey said that she would be deleting the previous tweets because it “ain’t worth it.”

Earlier this month, Halsey and Marshmello released their collaboration ‘Be Kind’.

Evidence – Throw It All Away

[Chorus]
I got some money I’m a blow it all today
They say Michael don’t throw it all away
And my reply was there’s more on the way
When I said it I was walking in the rain

[Verse 1]
I did a show in Chicago on the first
Now I’m back in LA like Chicago and First
No sun but I’ll father this verse
That’s all I’m probably worth
And I’m from sunny CA to rain on all of this earth
Rainy terrain, receive the God sent messages
We know the answer, but dance around what the question is
What is it
It’s back to who’s on first
It’s my dog
It’s his tail
It’s the chase
It’s the search
It’s the ignorance that causes all the bliss in my surroundings
Cause dealing with reality’s like drawing out your boundaries
And I refuse to be referred as less than a creative so catch me when I’m live in town as I’ve been demonstrating
That I could find my greatness in the waking of my absence
And absolutely kill it when they’re dealing out these bad hands
A player plays what a player’s dealt
And carries baggage like conveyor belts
And never fucking saves his wealth

[Chorus]
I got some money I’m gonna blow it all today
They say Michael don’t throw it all away
And my reply is there’s more on the way
When I said it I was walking in the rain

[Verse 2]
I write to Alchemist cause others don’t inspire me
I got my people and they got my back entirely
I kill with Iriscience on the side of me
And by myself I lay em’ out and iron out the irony
What a long winding road it’s been
With no sign of slowing up around its turns and bends
How many have friends that ain’t foes within
Dirty laundry in the wash, but them clothes don’t spin
I mean really, I kill two birds with one bullet
The target’s when I line it up, the triggers when I pull it
Out the gate a bit late, but the champ is back
I need a third hand to wear my rings and hold plaques
I hit the track like the runners new
Hands high like a stickup Killer Michael running jewels
It’s true, the eyes slanted, my fam rock the planet
Don’t take fans for granted like the money is due

[Chorus]
I got some money I’m a blow it all today
They say Michael don’t throw it all away
And my reply was there’s more on the way
When I said it I was walking in the rain

I got some money I’m a blow it all today
They say Michael don’t throw it all away
And my reply was there’s more on the way
When I said it I was walking in the rain

Evidence – Throw It All Away Lyrics

Chorus:
“I got some money I’m a blow it all today
They say Michael don’t throw it all away
And my reply was there’s more on the way
When I said it I was walking in the rain

Verse 1 :
“I did a show in Chicago on the first
Now I’m back in LA like Chicago and First
No sun but I’ll father this verse
That’s all I’m probably worth
And I’m from sunny CA to rain on all of this earth
Rainy terrain, receive the God sent messages
We know the answer, but dance around what the question is
What is it
It’s back to who’s on first
It’s my dog
It’s his tail
It’s the chase
It’s the search
It’s the ignorance that causes all the bliss in my surroundings
Cause dealing with reality’s like drawing out your boundaries
